About Toko Gallery

At Toko Gallery, the respect of each artist is core to their mission and purpose and as such, Toko Gallery gives full creative freedom to artists to showcase and create their pottery

You can also find other non pottery items such as cast iron teapots, glassware, towels and more all handmade in Japan

Toko Gallery is currently running a special exhibit of Goda Yoshimichi, an essential figure in Mashiko history who worked with Shoji Hamada in the 1940s and guided aspiring potters with technical knowledge and ideals of folk art (mingei)

Location & how to get there

Located on the main pottery street in Mashiko and is a 3 minute walk from the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art

Free parking is also available outside the workshop

2 hour drive from Tokyo

2 hour train ride: Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station (52 minutes) and take the bus from Platform 14 for 60 stops (59 minutes) to 益子陶芸美術館入口 and walk for 1 minute

At Toko Gallery, the respect of each artist is core to their mission and purpose and this has been consistent over their 5 generations of living in Mashiko and 3 generations of operating their gallery. As such, Toko Gallery gives full creative freedom to artists to showcase and create their pottery.

Here you will find be able to view and purchase pottery from the 40 different artists that Toko Gallery regularly features on a rolling 2 week basis. This allows customers to form relationships with the artists and their works and continue to purchase pieces from them!

Toko Gallery stocks a range of daily ware pieces as well as special art centrepieces of higher value (please ask the staff as these pieces may not be on display).
