  1. Kyunakagawamizube Park (Kameido, Tokyo)

How to get there:

  • Best time to visit: Early June

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • This riverside park near Kameido Central Park and Fureai Bridge is renowned for its hydrangea display along the riverbanks

  • Enjoy views of hydrangeas with Tokyo Skytree in the background

  1. Meigetsuin (Kamakura, Kanagawa)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour from Tokyo with timed parking near the temple such as here

  • By train: From Tokyo Station, take the JR Yokosuka Line to Kita-Kamakura Station and walk 10 minutes

  • Best time to visit: Mid to late June

  • Entrance fee: ¥500 per person

  • Known as the 'Temple of Hydrangeas', Meigetsuin in Kamakura boasts thousands of hydrangeas, creating a stunning contrast with its historical architecture

  • Take a careful look around and see if you can spot the many heart shaped hydrangeas - seeing them is said to give luck to your love life!

  1. Kamigo Ajisai no Sato (Sakae, Kanagawa)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1.5 hours Tokyo, however there is no nearby parking

  • By bus: From Ofuna Station, take bus No. 11 (上之行) for 16 stops, get off at 犬山(バス)and walk 8 minutes

  • Best time to visit: 14-22 June

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • A picturesque hilltop offering panoramic views of hydrangeas blooming in various colours

  • Run by the Sakae Hydrangea association, this little hill is deserving of all the attention and praise for the hard work that has gone in revitalising this area

  1. Kaisei Ajisai Village (Kaisei, Kanagawa)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour from Tokyo and parking is available onsite from 9am to 5pm (¥1,000 to ¥3,000)

  • By train: Take the Odakyu Line to Shin-Matsuda Station (North Exit), to the bus stop and take the 関本行 bus 5 stops to 吉田神社入口(バス)and walk 8 minutes

  • Best time to visit: 7-15 June

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • Over 5,000 hydrangeas transform this village into a vibrant sea of colours during the festival

  • Surrounded by paddy fields, this unique landscape is perfect when the winds are silent and best captured during sunrise or sunset

  1. Hondoji Temple (Chiba)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 50 minutes from Tokyo and parking is available here

  • By train: 11 minute walk from Kita-Kogane Station (North Exit)

  • Best time to visit: Mid to late June

  • Entrance fee: ¥300 per person

  • Known as the 'Hydrangea Temple', Hondo-ji Temple blooms with an estimated 50,000 hydrangeas in June

  • During this time the temple also features a water garden of irises, allowing visitors to enjoy both the hydrangeas and irises

  1. Koiwa Shobu Garden (Edogawa)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 30 minutes from Tokyo and parking is available here

  • By train: 5 minute walk from Edogawa Station (改札口 Exit)

  • Best time to visit: Early to late June

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • A 4,900 sqm garden spread in the riverbank of Edogawa River featuring a variety of irises and hydrangeas, offering a tranquil setting for visitors

  • Around the iris flowers are the hydrangeas

  • Koiwa Shobu Matsuri festival is also held in the first half of June so you can enjoy irises, hydrangeas the festival all in one place

  1. Hoshiimo Shrine (Ibaraki)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1.5 hours from Tokyo and free parking is available in the shrine

  • By train: Take the train to Katsura Station and switch to the Local Ajigaura train, alight at Ajigaura Station and walk 3 minutes

  • Best time to visit: Late June

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • A lesser known shrine in Ibaraki, offering a peaceful environment to enjoy blooming hydrangeas

  • Famous for its golden tori gates and connection to sweet potatoes, the hydrangeas by the main silver tori gates are often missed out
