Where to Find Them

  1. Tsutanuma Pond (Aomori)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 90 minutes from Aomori Station

  • By bus: Take the 十和田北線[みずうみ号]bus from Aomori Station (from East Exit) to 蔦温泉(バス)and walk for 12 minutes

  • Best time to visit: End of October

  • Located in the expansive Towada-Hachimantai National Park, the reflection of the tall beech trees seemingly floating in the water is simply breathtaking

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 30 minutes from Kuroishi Station

  • By bus: Take the 90 大川原温泉 bus from Kuroishi Station to 中野神社前 and walk for 1 minute (approx 30 minutes total)

  • Best time to visit: Mid October to early November

  • In this scenic spot you'll find over 100 vibrant maple leaves that are over a 100 years old!

  1. Naruko Gorge (Miyagi)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 70 minutes by car from Sendai Station

  • Best time to visit: Late October to early November

  • Photographers regularly camp out at the rest house hoping to get the perfect shot of the local train coming straight out of the mountain into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and yellows

  1. Kurikoma (Miyagi / Iwate / Akita)

How to get there:

  • Best time to visit: Mid September to mid October

  • Any local will tell you that the best time to hike up a mountain is in autumn

  • Choose your path up, from either the Miyagi, Iwate or Akita side with beginners paths to more challenging treks while admiring the carpet of autumn leaves covering the mountain

  1. Yamadera (Yamagata)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour from Sendai Station

  • By train: Take the Rapid Yamagata train from Sendai Station to Yamadera Station and walk for 4 minutes (approx 1 hour in total)

  • Best time to visit: Late October to mid November

  • These temple grounds on top of a mountain really come alive in Autumn

  • Get a sweeping panoramic view of the valley below from the hall that is over 300 years old and take in the unique temple grounds from up above

  1. Esashi Fujiwara Park (Iwate)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour from Morioka or 1 hour 45 mins from Sendai

  • Best time to visit: Mid October to early November (the light up only occurs during this period)

  • Entree fee: ¥1,000 for adults, ¥500 for children under 16

  • Travel back in time to the Heian period at this palatial complex

  • Originally built for the filming of a historical NHK drama, during the day dress up as a Heian noble and wander around the palace grounds

  • At night, see the best kept secret light up in the area!

  • Best time to visit: Mid October to early November (the light up only occurs during this period)

  • Entree fee: ¥1,000 for adults, ¥500 for children under 16

  • By car: 1.5 hours from Akita City or 2 hours 15 minutes from Sendai City

  • By train: Take the Masuda Oyasu train from Yuzawa Station to Bussankan and walk for 13 minutes (approximately 1 hour total)

  • Best time to visit: Mid October to early November

  • The dramatic V shaped gorge comes alive in Autumn

  • At Daifunto, almost boiling hot spring water comes cascading off the sides of the gorge, creating an otherworldly steaming atmosphere

  • Top it all off by actually bathing in the nearby onsens and enjoy the steamy water you've just seen

  • Best time to visit: Mid October to early November

  1. Tadami River Bridge Lookout Point (Fukushima)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 1 hour 40 minutes from Fukushima Station and parking is available for free at the nearby rest stop

  • Best time to visit: Late October to early November

  • Catch the historic Tadami train line as it makes its autumn journey

  • In 2011, parts of this line suffered severe damage due to the earthquake, however the love of locals and train enthusiasts brought this back!

  • Best time to visit: Late October to late November

  • One of the oldest public parks in Japan

  • Also one of the prettiest spots in Fukushima to enjoy a classical Japanese garden in all its autumn glory!

  • Autumn festival light up: October 31 to November 9 from 5:15pm to 7:30pm

  • Entry to the park is free, but payment is required to enter the teahouse

  • Best time to visit: Late October to late November

  • One of the oldest public parks in Japan

  • Also one of the prettiest spots in Fukushima to enjoy a classical Japanese garden in all its autumn glory!
