In this guide, we're covering Tohoku. This includes Fukushima, Iwate, Akita, Aomori, Yamagata, Miyagi and Sendai (in Miyagi).

Where to Find Them

  1. Korinji Temple (Nihonmatsu, Fukushima)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 30 minutes from Fukushima and parking is available here

  • Best time to visit: Mid June to early July

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • Home to around 20 varieties of hydrangeas

  • Many tourists visit every year to see the beautiful blue, purple and pink flowers that bloom around the temple

  1. Michinoku Ajisai Garden (Ichinoseki, Iwate)

How to get there:

  • By car: Parking available here

  • By bus: Take the Toban Kotsu Bus, Geibikei, Surisawa Line from bus stop no 3 at Ichinoseki Station West Exit Bus Terminal and get off at "Mizukami" (水上) and walk 15-20 minutes

  • Best time to visit: June 25 to July 21 (Hydrangea Pond: July 4 to July 21)

  • Entrance fee: ¥1,000 and ¥1,500 during Hydrangea Pond period

  • 30,000 hydrangeas line a 2km walking path located in a cedar forest, creating a tranquil, almost mysterious feeling environment

  • Best time to visit: June 25 to July 21 (Hydrangea Pond: July 4 to July 21)

  • Entrance fee: ¥1,000 and ¥1,500 during Hydrangea Pond period

  • 30,000 hydrangeas line a 2km walking path located in a cedar forest, creating a tranquil, almost mysterious feeling environment

  1. Unshoji Temple (Oga, Akita)

How to get there:

  • By car: Approximately 30 minutes from JR Hadachi Station and parking is available here

  • Best time to visit: June 14 to July 21

  • Entrance fee: ¥500

  • There is a special nighttime illumination from 6:45pm to 9:30pm (last admission at 9pm)

  • These hydrangeas have been nurtured over a 15 year timeframe by the deputy chief priest of the temple with his hard work resulting in this magical scene!

  • Best time to visit: June 14 to July 21

  • Entrance fee: ¥500

  • There is a special nighttime illumination from 6:45pm to 9:30pm (last admission at 9pm)

  • By train: From Yamagata Station, take the Local Shinjo train to Shinjo Station and walk 18 minutes

  • Best time to visit: Early to mid July

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • 5,000 hydrangeas and over 30 varieties fill the grounds of Yamagata's Higashiyama Park adding a wonderful dose of colour

  • The flowers are so beloved in this corner of Japan that they've been named the official flower of Shinjo City

  • Best time to visit: Early to mid July

How to get there:

  • By car: Due to narrow roads, public transport is recommended

  • By train: 19 minute walk from Kita-Sendai Station (North 1 Exit)

  • Best time to visit: Mid June to early July

  • Entrance fee: Free

  • Located in Kitayama, Aoba Ward, Sendai, locals flock to this temple to see over 1,200 hydrangeas in bloom

  • There are many seasonal events included matcha tasting held at this temple during this period

  • Best time to visit: Mid June to early July

  • Entrance fee: Free
